The Energy and Mines Commission of the Congress of the Republic approved by majority an opinion that modifies the energy efficiency law (Law 28832) in order to promote the participation of renewable energies in the electricity market.

With 13 votes in favor, 2 abstentions and 5 votes against, the working group gave the green light to the initiative that brings wind and solar energy closer to the tenders of the regulated market — that is, to the service that is used in homes —. Now it is up to the Plenary to support this measure.

From the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) assure that the proposal will translate into lower prices on electricity bills since non-conventional renewable energies (RER) will compete with the hydroelectric and thermoelectric companies that currently prevail.

Jaime Luyo, Vice Minister of Electricity, has recognized that the parent law has “flaws in its design” and therefore, these imperfections must be corrected to guarantee competition in the regulated market; while from the Central Reserve Bank (BCRP)warn that the residential rate in Peru is the highest in the Pacific Alliance.
