The popular myth about water was dispelled by expert biochemist Maria Kuleshova. In a conversation with Moslenta, she refuted the belief about the dangers of drinking clean water during meals.
She explained that the ban on drinking water with meals is usually due to the fact that water dilutes gastric juice with digestive enzymes. This leads to a decrease in acidity and a deterioration in the process of digestion of food. At the same time, the expert added, there is no research or evidence confirming that drinking water with meals can disrupt digestion, cause bloating or dilute gastric juices.
Kuleshova noted that the argument about dilution of gastric juice is easily broken down into two simple facts: food contains an impressive percentage of water, as well as, in fact, gastric juice. According to her, you can drink with meals, but it is better not carbonated and not sweet water containing a large amount of sugar.
The expert emphasized that drinking between meals is not harmful, but it is better not to do this while chewing – the food in the mouth should have time to soak in enzymes and saliva, which is necessary for normal digestion.
