The UN Security Council needs to be reformed to bring it in line with “the realities of today’s world,” Secretary General António Guterres said at the G7 summit.
According to Reuters, the Secretary General noted that the structure of the Security Council reflects the balance of power in 1945. He also said that the “global financial architecture”, which is “outdated, dysfunctional and unfair”, also needs reform. In the face of the economic turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the military operation in Ukraine, “it has failed to fulfill its core function as a global social safety net,” Guterres said.
Leaders of various countries have previously made calls for reforming the UN Security Council. In particular, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for bringing “global diversity” there and including the states of Asia, Africa and Latin America, American President Joe Biden, in turn, advocated expanding the list of permanent and non-permanent members in order to reduce the influence of Russia and China. The Ukrainian authorities demanded to exclude Russia from the Security Council after the start of the military operation.
