Ukrainian Ambassador to Warsaw Vasily Zvarych rebuked Lukasz Yasina, representative of the Polish Foreign Ministry, who called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to apologize for the Volyn massacre. It is reported by RBC.
“Any attempt to impose on the President of Ukraine or Ukraine what we should do in relation to our common past is unacceptable and unfortunate,” he wrote on the social network.
Zvarych said that Ukraine remembers history, is ready for dialogue and mutual understanding, but at the same time Kyiv calls for respect and balance in statements, especially given the ongoing hostilities in the country. The diplomat added that “the formula for true reconciliation in Ukrainian-Polish relations <…> sounds like this: “forgive and ask for forgiveness.”
Yasina, in an interview with Onet, said that “the Poles, as the Polish state, took responsibility for the crimes that our state committed against the Ukrainians,” but there was no apology from Kiev. He suggested that Zelensky should take on this role. At the same time, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs admitted that at the moment the problem of the Volyn massacre is not the most important for the Ukrainian people, and the president of the country has many other concerns.
