Israel supports Ukraine’s position in its conflict with Russia, but cannot ignore Moscow’s influence in the Middle East, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said in an interview with The Jerusalem Post.
“Russia is a player in the Middle East and hundreds of thousands of Jews live in Russia; therefore, we express a moral position of support for Ukraine, but at the same time we protect the interests of our security and the Jewish Agency in Russia,” he said.
At the same time, Cohen stressed that “Israel is on the side of the Western states,” and noted that his country was the only one from the Middle East that sent its representative to Kiev – in February, the head of the Foreign Ministry met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The politician also added that Israel supports Zelensky’s position on a peaceful settlement and stands for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. According to him, the countries are jointly working on a system for preventing rocket attacks on Ukrainian territory. The fact that Kyiv will receive such technology became known in January of this year.
