In the 1980s, several hundred women fell victim to the cunning marriage fraudster Jerzy Kalibabka. His criminal activities inspired the creation of the series. When the production hit the screens, a scandal broke out, and even priests protested against “Tulip”.

The history of Poland lived in the People’s Republic of Poland. A fisherman from Dziwnów first fell in love with women he met accidentally, and then robbed them of their savings. When his pockets were stuffed to the brim with money and gold, he left them heartbroken. His criminal activities resulted in a court sentence and a group of 28 children.

Several hundred women fell victim to “Tulip”. Kalibabka’s story has been transferred to the screens

The criminal activity of PRL’s Casanova, who was brought before the justice system only after almost 5 years, became an inspiration for Janusz Dymek and Andrzej Swat to create the series. The plot focuses on Jurek, who, bored with his life in the Pomeranian province where he fishes every day on a fishing boat, plans to start a pimp business. Although the idea ends in a fiasco, a German girl, Karin, he meets accidentally changes his life completely. He quickly realizes that the woman who is infatuated with him does not question his requests for money. Then an idea for a “business” is born in his head, which is to provide him with a life of luxury.

The director was Janusz Dymek, and the screenplay was created by Andrzej Swat based on articles by Leszek Konarski. The journalist in “Tygodnik Powszechny” analyzed in detail and then described Kalibabka’s actions. The character of the title character was played by Jan Monczka, who at that time performed mainly on the stage of theaters and it was his second time in front of the camera. After this role, he received a number of positive reviews, and critics appreciated his acting performance: a bastard who, despite numerous faults, arouses sympathy. — Cinematographer Antek Wójtowicz said that you need to create a character that the viewer will like. If he doesn’t do this in the beginning, the show will be lost. So all our efforts were aimed at making Janek Monczka, with all his scoundrels, like him. And he succeeded — the director in “Local Review”. Other roles were played by Maria Pakulnis, Krystyna Tkacz, Jerzy Kryszak and Marta Klubowicz.

The premiere of “Tulip” took place in an atmosphere of scandal. Petitions were written to remove the series from the air

The premiere of the first episode of “Tulip” took place on February 22, 1987 on Telewizja Polska and immediately caused a scandal. Although the reviewers could not contain their delight, admiring Andrzej Korzyński’s excellent performances, cinematography and illustrative music, the viewers were much more critical. It was believed that the production glorified the notorious fraudster, promoted nihilism and contributed to the demoralization of the audience, especially since the hero of this story at that time willingly gave interviews, praising his current lifestyle.

I borrowed money from each of them and never returned it. I didn’t have to return them because I slept with them

— Jerzy Kalibabka to the indignation of public opinion. He did not see anything wrong with his actions, as he claimed that “he was born to love”, and physical work is only for “boors and motorbikes”. The protest initiated by the women was supported even by the priests, who from the pulpit appealed to the faithful not to watch the production. Despite this, the 6-episode series was watched by as many as 19 million viewers. In response to the numerous controversies, before the broadcast of each of them appeared a warning notice “Adult viewers only”. All episodes of the series “Tulip” are available on the website.
