Certain eating habits can be a warning sign of frontotemporal dementia. According to MedikForum, this type of dementia causes behavioral and speech problems, but can also change eating habits.

As neurologist Alexandra Alekhina explained to the portal, people with this disease can “strive for sweet, fatty foods or carbohydrates and forget about their table manners.” People suffering from the disease may also no longer know when to stop eating, drinking alcohol or smoking, she said.

A new study has identified two eating behaviors that are associated with dementia. The scientists explained that the presence of eating disorders is one of the main criteria for diagnosing frontotemporal dementia. Comparing eating patterns in patients with these two types of dementia, the researchers observed that patients with frontotemporal dementia had “significant” deviations in appetite, eating habits, and eating habits.

“Patients with this type of dementia ate ‘significantly’ more carbohydrates and sugar,” experts say.
