was born in Mexico in 1834. Her appearance terrified everyone, including her mother. A hairy monster – this is how the devil was imagined in that area and unfortunately for people a little girl fit this description. Probably to protect her daughter, the woman decided to run away with her into the forest.
From an early age, she was not treated as a human being. Her appearance was used by others
After two years, the girl and her mother were found by a group of shepherds. The woman immediately disowned her daughter, which put Julia in an orphanage. There she was given the surname Pastrana. The child quickly acclimated to the facility. Apart from the unusual one, she was basically no different from other residents of the orphanage. When she had to leave the orphanage, Mexican governor Pedro Sanchez took her under his wing. The man wanted to conduct experiments on her.
Sanchez’s research was to prove the triumph of civilization over nature. To this end, he taught Julia English, French, various dances and songs, and all the other skills that girls were acquiring in those days. In the spring of 1854, Pastrana decided to leave the governor’s house to find her relatives. Not long after leaving the estate, the politician met a certain Mr. Rates, who persuaded her to participate in “freak shows” in America.
She made her first appearance in December of the same year. The 20-year-old stood in front of a crowd of onlookers on the stage of New York’s Gothic Hall musical theater. On the banners advertising the show, you could read that the appearance of the woman is due to her origin. Rates presented her as a hybrid of man and animal, the so-called Mexican Bear Woman. After a few performances, she was sold to another showman. It was JW Beach, who insisted that Julia had orangutan genes.
After a tour in the USA, Pastrana went to Europe, and later came under the care of Theodor Lent. On the old continent, her living situation did not improve at all. She could not leave the house without covering her face, and she had to present herself in front of hundreds of people every day in private meetings. Interestingly, in later years, Lent and Julia got married, and soon after the woman became pregnant.
She died shortly after giving birth. Death did not bring her peace
Pastrana’s husband, along with scientists, wondered about the appearance of Julia’s baby. Lent hoped that his offspring would be more like his mother. This way he could become even richer. The answer to this question came on March 20, 1860, when a four-kilogram boy was born, completely covered with hair. Unfortunately, the newborn survived only two days, and Pastrana, exhausted by childbirth, died on the night of March 24/25. Not wanting to lose his source of income, Lent decided to mummify the bodies of his wife and son. The procedure made the “monkey woman” tour around the world for decades. Finally, after more than 130 years, thanks to the Mexican authorities, her body was buried in the cemetery in Sinaloa de Leyva.
