The court in Yekaterinburg convicted the former mayor of the city Yevgeny Roizman (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation) in a criminal case on discrediting the Russian army. It is reported by Interfax.
“Recognize guilty (…) and finally impose a fine of 260 thousand rubles on Roizman Yevgeny Vadimovich,” the judge said.
Roizman’s lawyer, Vladislav Idamzhapov, told reporters that the decision to appeal would be made after receiving a copy of the verdict: “We will receive a copy of the verdict and make a decision there. Yevgeny Vadimovich can appeal on his own, or he may not appeal. Defenders have the right to appeal or not to appeal.”
Prosecutor Dmitry Sokolov explained to journalists that punishment in the form of a fine in this criminal case is the only possible one.
“Given that the crime was committed in the old version of the criminal law, punishment in the form of a fine is the only possible one that could be imposed in principle. Since earlier the crime was classified as a crime of minor gravity, Roizman is not convicted. (…) The prosecution requested the only possible punishment (…), close to the maximum,” Sokolov said.
