The car tried to enter the territory of the Vatican without permission, the gendarmerie of the city-state opened fire on it. It is reported by RBC with reference to Corriere della Sera.

The incident occurred on the evening of May 18, around 20:00 local time (21:00 Moscow time). The driver of the car tried to ram the gate of St. Anne, which is considered the main entrance to the territory of the city-state.

Representatives of the Pontifical Swiss Guard (the armed forces of the Vatican) tried to stop the man, as he did not have the appropriate permission. After a warning, he drove away from the scene, but later returned and rammed the gate at high speed. The car passed through two checkpoints.

One of the gendarmes fired a pistol at the front wheels of the car, but the car did not stop. Law enforcement officers raised an alarm and blocked the exit to St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Gardens. By that time, the car had left the San Damaso yard, and the driver himself left the passenger compartment. The police detained him.

The detainee was a 40-year-old man, he was examined by doctors. Doctors concluded that he was in a “severe psychophysical condition.” He was placed in a pre-trial detention cell.
