Montana Governor Greg Gianforte signed legislation to ban TikTok in the state. It is reported by Interfax.
“In order to protect the privacy of Montana residents from the Chinese Communist Party, I banned TikTok,” Gianforte wrote on the social network.
Montana thus became the first US state to ban the app.
The law, due to take effect Jan. 1, bans TikTok from operating in Montana and app stores such as the Apple App Store and Google Play Store from making it available for download in the state.
Violations of the law can result in fines of up to $10,000 per day. However, penalties will not apply to users.
Late last year, the U.S. Congress approved a bill banning TikTok from being used on federal government phones and electronic devices. In February, the White House gave all federal agencies 30 days to remove the Chinese app from all government devices.
In turn, US lawmakers plan to consider a bill that would allow the US president to ban TikTok altogether.
According to the US authorities, the Chinese authorities may use the application to collect personal data of Americans. TikTok has over 100 million users in the US.
