In Italy, a record shipment of cocaine weighing almost 3 tons was found and confiscated, which was transported from Ecuador to Armenia through Georgia, reports Il Messaggero with reference to the Reggio Calabria Anti-Mafia Office.
The cocaine was seized at the port of Gioia Tauro. Customs officers found the drug in two containers that were being transported from Guayaquil (Ecuador) to Armenia through the port of Batumi in Georgia. The substance lay in refrigerated containers over 12 m long among 78 tons of bananas.
The anti-mafia office in Reggio Calabria, after reviewing the documentation and checking the companies involved in the shipment, decided to conduct an inspection of two boxes, which, as it turned out, contained cocaine. The substance was detected with the help of special scanners and the cynological unit of the Finguard. According to Il Messaggero, if the traffickers were able to deliver the cargo to its destination, they would have earned more than 800 million euros on this, since the cocaine turned out to be “extremely pure and in perfect condition.”
For the transportation and destruction of drugs, more than 30 employees of the Finguard were involved.
