The Armed Forces of Ukraine (UAF) are not launching the promised counteroffensive due to the complexity of the upcoming operation and high risks, retired US Lieutenant General, ex-commander of US forces in Europe Mark Hertling suggested in a column for The Washington Post.
According to Hertling, Ukraine’s expected spring offensive is likely to take place “in the near future,” but the exact date is impossible to say. He stressed that during the offensive, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny would have only two main advantages: the choice of time and place of the attack.
“Zaluzhny and his commanders are planning this offensive. He studies intelligence reports, probes the positions of the Russians, ”Hertling emphasized. However, according to him, the most difficult thing that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has to do is “to organize the forces necessary for the attack.” Zaluzhny needs to “synchronize the current mobilization” with his allies, coordinate the transfer of these forces back to Ukraine, and then directly to the line of contact.
“Offensive operations require more forces, greater maneuverability, precise targeting and shooting, and longer and more reliable supply lines. The Ukrainian army has not carried out anything like this on such a scale, ”added the ex-commander-in-chief.
