NATO countries are ready at the July summit in Vilnius to offer Ukraine immediate assistance, but not membership in the alliance. This is stated in an article in The Wall Street Journal.
The bloc’s diplomats and officials are now working on a decision that would signal that Kyiv could join the alliance in the future, and are preparing an offer of immediate assistance, the publication’s sources say. However, according to some Western officials, Germany remains opposed to Ukraine joining NATO.
German officials fear that the admission of the host country will increase the risk of a confrontation between Russia and NATO, the newspaper notes.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that all countries of the block agree with the prospect of Ukraine’s membership. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky himself said that Kyiv would like to hear at the NATO summit “something more than about the “open doors” of the alliance.” He called for a “clear signal” to be given to the Ukrainian side that it would be accepted, although it understands that it will not be able to join NATO while hostilities are going on.
