Voters voting in Turkey’s presidential and parliamentary elections are prohibited from entering voting booths with mobile phones and cameras. It is reported by RBC with reference to the Hurriyet newspaper.

There are penalties for violating the ban. Restrictions apply, among other things, to video cameras and film cameras.

Voting in Turkey started at 8:00 am and will run until 5:00 pm. Three candidates are vying for the presidency: incumbent head of state Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a single opposition candidate Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and ATA Alliance candidate Sinan Ogan. To win the election, one of the candidates needs to gain more than 50% of the vote.

The fourth candidate, the chairman of the Motherland party, Muharrem Ince, withdrew from the elections on May 11. He accused his competitors of trying to destroy his reputation, including publishing deepfake porn and transferring funds of unknown origin to his son’s accounts.

According to the polls, the main struggle will unfold between Erdogan and Kilicdaroglu. Erdogan won 43.7% of the vote, while Kılıçdaroğlu 49.3%, according to a public opinion poll by Konda conducted on May 6-7 among 3,480 people from 35 provinces. Sinan Ogan scored 4.8%. To win in the first round, one of the candidates needs to receive more than 50% of the votes. If none of them can do this, a second round will be held between the leaders of the vote – it is scheduled for May 28.
