The European Court of Human Rights did not satisfy the lawsuit of the lawyers of the imprisoned former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili demanding a deferral of serving his sentence in order to receive treatment in one of the foreign clinics. The head of the Georgian Ministry of Justice, Rati Bregadze, spoke about this, Interfax reports.
According to Bregadze, today the decision of the Strasbourg court was published, according to which the transfer of Saakashvili to Warsaw for treatment was denied. He added that this decision does not in any way oblige the Georgian state to transfer Saakashvili to any other medical institution within the country.
Speaking about the transfer of Saakashvili from a civilian clinic back to prison, the minister indicated that this would be done if the doctors allowed. Now, he recalled, Saakashvili is in the Vivamed clinic, and at this stage there are no objective prerequisites for his transfer either to another clinic or to a penitentiary institution.
In turn, the relatives of the ex-president, his lawyers and opposition representatives assure that Saakashvili’s condition is critical and he must be sent abroad for treatment.
