The party association “New Unity” decided to nominate Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic Edgar Rinkevich for the post of President of Latvia. According to Interfax, this was announced at a press conference by representatives of the party.

Ainar Latkovskis, chairman of the New Unity parliamentary faction, said that on May 11, New Unity officially nominated Rinkevich as a candidate. On May 10, this political association supported the decision of the candidate, the current president of the country, Egils Levits, not to run for a second term. After that, the New Unity faction in the Seimas discussed the issue of nominating their candidate and decided to nominate Rinkevich.

Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins, for his part, said that since Levits had announced that he would not run for a new term, New Unity “in a very short time and with a very high consensus” came to the decision to nominate Rinkevics for the presidency .

Rinkevich, in turn, thanked his faction colleagues and the prime minister for their trust and stressed that the main task of the next president, given the extremely volatile international situation, is internal and external security.

He noted that he would like to see more rapid and decisive actions of Latvia both in the sphere of the national economy and in matters of compliance with human rights standards. If the parliament “provides this confidence”, then the politician is ready to set a high priority for these issues on the agenda of the head of state, the presidential candidate said.
