NATO is finalizing a common strategy to counter terrorism and the threat from Russia, which represents “the biggest reconfiguration since the Cold War.” According to RBC, this is reported by El Pais, citing sources involved in the development of the strategy.

The strategy is about 4,000 pages long and describes NATO’s plans to change its approach to deploying forces in various regions and responding to threats from Moscow (last year the alliance recognized it as the main threat) – from military to cyber attacks. In particular, the newspaper writes, the alliance plans to move away from deploying large combat groups and instead intends to deploy brigades of about 5,000 troops, which can be deployed on the ground faster. Among the threats are the possibility of Russia deploying thousands of soldiers near the eastern border of NATO and the vulnerability of the infrastructure of the member countries of the alliance (this was noticed due to the explosions of the Nord Stream gas pipelines). The strategy lists the principles of protecting key NATO facilities, the newspaper’s interlocutors noted.

Emphasis is placed on strengthening not only the eastern flank of the bloc, a “360-degree approach” is envisaged, that is, the entire territory of the alliance. Sources of the newspaper noted that in light of the renewal of NATO’s strategy, new investments will be required.
