Prosecutor’s Office opens preliminary investigations in three provinces for complaints made by the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security

So far in November, authorities of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute have submitted five complaints of irregular acts to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The Office of the Prosecutor opens three preliminary investigations regarding five complaints made in the provinces of Azuay, Guayas, Pichincha, Manabí and Tungurahua by authorities of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) in the event of possible irregular acts.

According to the IESS, of the five cases reported so far in November, three have already been assigned to specialized investigation units of the Attorney General’s Office. At the moment the cases are in the reserved phase of investigation.

One of the cases in which the Prosecutor’s Office has already started an investigation would be related to alleged acts that would reveal embezzlement in the province of Azuay. Another complaint would be aimed at investigating a possible intimidation by two people outside the Teodoro hospital Maldonado Carbo, from Guayaquil, to get the signing of a contract at that health center.

The third case in the preliminary investigation phase in the Prosecutor’s Office would be one opened in the province of Pichincha against a funeral service provider. In Tungurahua and Manabí, two other irregular events were also reported, which the local IESS authorities were following up.

For the IESS, it would be a priority to advance with the investigations of these and all the complaints that come from the citizens. In the line of contributing to denounce and prosecute acts of corruption, within the Social Security would work on the reactivation of the Ethics Committee, Body that would be in charge of receiving and following up on complaints about possible irregularities.
