Working in the country helps burn up to several hundred calories per hour. Oleg Lysenko, a nutritionist and gastroenterologist, spoke about this in an interview with Lenta.ru.
“There is only one way to fight excess weight – a calorie deficit and increased physical activity,” says Lysenko. “Working in the country is like working out in the gym.”
Low-intensity dacha work, such as weeding and watering plants, can burn 200 to 400 calories an hour, Lysenko noted. Mowing your lawn with a hand-held lawn mower weighing about three kilograms will help burn 250 to 350 calories per hour.
Digging up the beds is a more intense and energetic workout and can burn 400 to 600 calories per hour, making it one of the best exercises for gardeners. Chopping and sawing firewood will burn about 600 calories per hour
True, the doctor emphasized, men and women spend calories differently, and any activity should be safe. Do not overwork yourself and ignore the rest.
“Losing weight through exercise alone is unlikely to succeed. With an increase in physical activity, accompanied by an increased consumption of calories, in contrast to the usual energy consumption, the mechanism of energy conservation is activated in the body. In addition to this, after exhausting work, most likely, you will eat after a lot more than you should. And where there is no calorie deficit, there is no weight loss, ”the nutritionist warned.
He also recommended sticking to proper nutrition according to the plate system. Vegetables, fruits and berries should take up half the plate. Complex carbohydrates (including potatoes) – a quarter of a plate. And the remaining quarter – protein sources (fish, meat, beans, nuts, dairy products).
