Ukraine is preparing a decree to ban imports from Moldova. This was told by the Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture – Trade Representative of Ukraine Taras Kachka.
According to Kommersant, in this way Kyiv reacted to Chisinau’s plans to ban the import of Ukrainian agricultural products.
Kachka said that the Ukrainian side had notified the Moldovan authorities that any restriction by Chisinau would be considered an “extremely unfriendly step” and would entail an immediate ban on all imports from the country.
Earlier it became known that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry of Moldova may introduce temporary restrictions on the import of grains and oilseeds from Ukraine. The head of the department, Vladimir Bolya, noted that Chisinau is preparing other measures to support farmers. The government intends to compensate farmers for the excise tax on diesel fuel used and subsidize the cost of fertilizers and plant protection products.
The Association of Moldovan Farmers asked to introduce temporary restrictions on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products. The collapse in grain and oilseed prices has left thousands of small and medium-sized farmers hit by last year’s drought on the brink of bankruptcy, the organization said. As explained by the executive director of the association Alexander Slusari, due to the export of Ukrainian grain, sunflower and corn at a dumping price, the situation began to put pressure on regional markets, including the Moldovan one.
