The European Commission believes that the European Union should be able to impose restrictions on the export of goods to third countries as part of the fight against circumvention of sanctions against Russia, DPA reports. According to the agency, the EC sent this proposal for the 11th package of restrictive measures against Moscow to the member countries of the association the day before, May 5.
According to the initiative, a legal possibility should be created to restrict supplies from the EU to third countries “as a deterrent”. If this measure is not enough, at the next stage, Brussels may block the export of certain products. The first to be blocked are goods that can be used for both civilian and military purposes – in particular, night vision devices.
According to the agency, representatives of 27 EU member states will discuss the proposal of the European Commission with the head of the EC Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday, May 10. Brussels expects to adopt a new package of sanctions before the end of the month. In addition to export controls, the package will include restrictions on people and organizations supporting military operations in Ukraine. Von der Leyen said earlier that the new package would be aimed at combating circumvention of measures already introduced against Moscow.
At the end of April, the Financial Times reported that the EU is considering imposing export restrictions on states that re-export sanctioned products to Russia.
