The French authorities have begun the evacuation of their citizens and embassy staff from Sudan. It is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to Agence France-Presse.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden confirmed that US diplomats and their families were evacuated on Saturday from the US embassy in Sudan’s capital Khartoum. Up to 100 people were evacuated from the embassy, according to US Under Secretary of State for Management John Bass.
“France has begun a ‘prompt evacuation’ of citizens and diplomatic personnel from Sudan,” the agency reports.
It is noted that France also intends to provide allied countries with assistance in the evacuation of their citizens.
Since April 15, fighting has been going on in Sudan between the Rapid Reaction Force (RRF) under the command of Mohammed Hamdan Daglo and the regular army. The opposing forces in Sudan have been trading conflicting statements about military successes and control of facilities, launching a large-scale information war in the media and social networks. On Friday, both sides announced a truce on the occasion of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr. The parties are ready to hold it for three days.
The death toll from clashes in the country has risen to 600, according to Sudan’s health minister. World Health Organization spokeswoman Margaret Harris said at a weekly UN briefing in Geneva on Friday that 413 people, 3 551 were injured. According to the Sudanese doctors’ union, 256 civilians have been killed and 1,454 injured since the clashes began.
