The Ukrainian authorities are disappointed with the inability of the European Union countries to fulfill their own plan for the purchase of ammunition for Kyiv, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said on social networks.
In his message, he called this issue “a test of whether the EU has strategic autonomy in making important new decisions in the field of security,” RBC reports. At the same time, according to Kuleba, for Ukraine “the cost of inaction is measured in human lives.”
Earlier in April, the European Council adopted a program to support Ukraine for 1 billion euros due to the shortage of shells in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Under this program, Member States will be reimbursed for the cost of ammunition transferred to Ukraine from existing stocks or through reprioritization of orders.
“There is no better demonstration of the EU’s determination to continue to support Ukraine’s legitimate right to self-defense,” said Josep Borrell, head of European diplomacy. In late March, he announced a “historic decision” to supply one million artillery shells to Ukraine over the next 12 months. In February, Borrell said that the key issue was to ensure a continuous flow of shells for the Ukrainian army. He warned that if Europe fails in this, “the outcome of the conflict will be in jeopardy.”
