The Egyptian military stationed at the Meroe air force base in Sudan returned home after the base was stormed by the Sudanese militant group Rapid Reaction Forces. It is reported by Interfax with reference to The Guardian.
Dozens of Egyptian soldiers have returned home after being handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
The Egyptian soldiers were stationed at Meroe Air Force Base, where they trained the Sudanese military as part of an agreement between Sudan and Egypt.
The situation in Sudan became more complicated on April 15, when clashes with the use of heavy weapons broke out between the army and the RRF in Khartoum and some other cities. The statements of the RRF command said that the current situation has developed after the armed forces, without any prior notice, besieged one of their bases in the southern suburbs of Khartoum. The army command, in turn, explained its actions by the fact that the RRF had recently acted more than once without any coordination with the military.
During this time, several hundred people died, several thousand were injured. Despite attempts to introduce a ceasefire, the opposing sides do not stop fighting.
