UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a three-day truce in Sudan. It is reported by TASS.
Guterres said that he took part in a virtual meeting on the situation in Sudan, along with the chairs of the African Union (AU), the League of Arab States (LAS), the Intergovernmental Development Organization (IGAD). “We strongly condemn the ongoing fighting in Sudan and call for an immediate end to the violence,” said the Secretary General of the world organization.
“As a priority, I call for a truce for at least three days during the celebration [мусульманского праздника] Eid al-Fitr (Eid al-Fitr) so that people can leave the war zone and gain access to medical care, food and basic necessities,” Guterres said.
Earlier, the UN warned that the ongoing hostilities in Sudan could lead to the fact that millions of people in that country would starve. This warning was issued by the UN World Food Program (WFP).
“A third of the population is already struggling to get enough food,” the organization said in a statement. A record number of people were already facing famine in Sudan prior to the April 15 conflict. In 2023, WFP planned to support more than 7.6 million people.”
As WFP points out, the ongoing fighting is “preventing the delivery of critical food supplies.” The organization said that “at least 10 cars and 6 food trucks were stolen”, while a number of WFP offices and warehouses in the country “were seized and looted, resulting in the loss of up to 4,000 tons of food.”
The organization called on “all parties to the conflict to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of humanitarian workers” and “to end the fighting and reach an agreement that will allow the continued delivery of vital food and humanitarian aid.”
