The President of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traore, signed a decree on general mobilization, which was previously approved by the Constitutional Council of the African country and the government. It is reported by TASS with reference to Radio France Internationale.
It is noted that the decree created a legal basis for the adoption of exceptional measures in order to ensure national security against the threat of terrorism and extremist groups. Now the authorities can call up citizens of the country over 18 years old for military service. At the same time, under the supervision of the defense and security forces, the entire civilian population in each individual settlement can be organized to protect them from the militants.
In areas where operations are being carried out against terrorist groups, the responsibility for public order rests with the military command. It has the right to restrict the individual rights and freedoms of citizens.
The authorities also gained the right to requisition property, including goods, finances and logistics. For these purposes, a special commission has been created within the Ministry of Defense. Compensation will be paid for seized property.
On April 19, the Council of Ministers of Burkina Faso approved a bill introducing a special tax on a number of consumer goods to finance the Patriotic Support Fund created last January. First of all, the new fee concerns alcohol, tobacco and cosmetics.
Burkina Faso in recent years has become the epicenter of terrorist activity by Islamist groups in West Africa.
