It is too early to talk about the translation of the Kyrgyz language into Latin, the development of the state language should continue in Cyrillic, said President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov. According to Interfax, he said this at a meeting with the head of the National Commission for the State Language of Kyrgyzstan Kanybek Osmonaliev.
“It is premature to talk about the transition of the Kyrgyz language to the Latin alphabet. Without providing the proper, competent level of proficiency in the state language in Cyrillic, there can be no talk of switching to the Latin alphabet. Now this question is not raised, the development of the state language should continue in Cyrillic,” the president said.
According to Zhaparov’s press service, at this meeting the president made a stern remark to Osmonaliev, urging him to refrain from careless statements regarding language policy, in particular, about the translation of the Kyrgyz language into Latin.
In addition, the head of state stressed that one of the important areas of state policy is the support, preservation, development of the state – Kyrgyz – language.
On April 19, members of the country’s parliament, Emil Toktoshev and Kamila Taliyeva, suggested that Osmonaliev translate the Kyrgyz language from Cyrillic to Latin. He replied that his commission was already developing several options for translating the language into Latin, and if a political decision was made on such a translation, his commission would be ready to implement it. He recalled that attempts to switch to the Latin alphabet in Kyrgyzstan have been made since 1993.
