The State Duma adopted amendments on punishment up to life imprisonment for high treason. According to the current Criminal Code, the punishment for treason provides for imprisonment for a term of 12 to 20 years and a fine of up to 500 thousand rubles. In addition, the deputies supported the toughening of penalties for terrorism.
After the adoption of the law, espionage, the issuance of information constituting state secrets to foreigners, going over to the side of the enemy, or providing any assistance to the state in activities directed against Russia will be punishable by life imprisonment.
The law also amends Article 205 of the Criminal Code (“terrorist act”).
It was proposed to increase the maximum term for committing acts that created a threat of loss of life and aimed at destabilizing the situation in the country from the current 15 years to 20 years.
The minimum threshold of punishment for recruitment or involvement in the commission of terrorist crimes (Art. 205.1 of the Criminal Code) can be increased to seven years. Currently, the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation provides for a minimum period of five years.
