Italy has overcome dependence on Russian gas, now Russian fuel covers only a little more than a tenth of the country’s needs, as opposed to the previous 40%, said Minister of Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto-Fratin in an interview with Corriere della Sera.
According to him, this was achieved due to the increase in gas imports through pipelines from the East through the Trans Adriatic Gas Pipeline (TAP), as well as from Africa with new agreements with Algeria and Libya.
“But the real guarantee is provided by regasification terminals, which will allow us to buy gas at the best price in the world, waiting for the development of more and more energy produced from renewable sources and understanding when it will be possible to realize fourth generation nuclear energy,” the minister added.
In early March, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the European Union had managed to reduce its dependence on Russian gas. According to her, the United States and Norway helped the EU in this matter, supplying the European Union with piped and liquefied gas, while Russia reduced fuel exports by 80% in eight months.
