Ugandan police have detained Finance and Planning Minister Amos Lugoubi on suspicion of involvement in a case involving the theft of metal roofing sheets for houses under construction in the country’s northwest. It is reported by TASS with reference to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
It is noted that Lugoubi became the second member of the government of Uganda, arrested in a scandalous case of the theft of roofing iron for houses being built as part of a state program to help the poorest segments of the population in the country. 10 days ago, Karamoja Regional Affairs Minister Maria Goretti Kitutu was detained in this case. The Minister of State is due to appear in court on April 17.
According to the Ugandan newspaper New Vision, the investigation found that 14.5 thousand sheets of roofing iron for houses being built under the state program in the Karamoja region were stolen with the participation of relatives of Minister Kitutu. These sheets were found in the possession of ministers, including Lugolubi. The latter used them for roofing outbuildings.
