Washington strongly condemns North Korea’s ballistic missile launch and calls on Pyongyang to sit down at the negotiating table. According to Interfax, this is stated in a statement by the official representative of the US National Security Council, Adrienne Watson, distributed by the White House.
“The United States strongly condemns the DPRK for its long-range ballistic missile test. We urge all countries to condemn these violations and call on the DPRK to sit down at the table of serious negotiations. The door to diplomacy has not been closed, but Pyongyang must immediately cease its destabilizing actions and instead opt for diplomatic engagement.
The representative noted that this test is a violation of numerous UN Security Council resolutions. It “raises tensions and risks destabilizing the security situation in the region.”
She added that the United States will take all necessary measures to ensure the security of the United States, the Republic of Korea and Japan.
North Korea launched a medium-range or long-range ballistic missile from a point near Pyongyang towards the Sea of Japan on Thursday morning. The South Korean military estimated that the high-angle missile traveled about 1,000 km before falling into the water.
The launch took place two days before the 111th birthday of late North Korean founder Kim Il Sung and came amid speculation that Pyongyang could launch a long-range missile to put its first military satellite into orbit. Earlier, North Korea promised to finish preparations for the launch of the satellite in April.
