The layer of ash that fell after the eruption of the Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka reaches 20 centimeters in some places, Roman Vasilevsky, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Kamchatka Territory, told reporters. According to him, in Kozyrevsk the ash layer was 6-8 centimeters, in Klyuchi – about 11 centimeters. In places where there is an overflow, the height reaches 20 centimeters, Vasilevsky added.
According to him, the ashes are brought from the forest. In addition, the ashfall continued at night and on Wednesday morning. People in Klyuchi, Kozyrevsk and Maisky are being given medical masks and water, and the military was involved in their distribution, RIA Novosti reports.
At the same time, two new ash ejections have already occurred on Shiveluch on Wednesday – one to a height of 8 thousand meters, the other – 10 thousand meters. The ash plume from the volcano stretches for 350 km, reports the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The Shiveluch eruption in Kamchatka began early Tuesday morning local time. Several villages in the east of the peninsula were covered with an ash cloud. According to scientists, the ash fall in the village of Klyuchi became the strongest in 60 years.
