Last spring, the US authorities approved a program for the sale of weapons to Ukraine under lend-lease, but these deliveries have not yet begun due to Washington’s unwillingness to impose monetary obligations on Kiev, Politico writes in the NatSec Daily newsletter, citing sources.
“We’re prioritizing security assistance that they wouldn’t have to pay us for,” a senior Biden administration official said.
At the same time, the interlocutor of the publication noted that the US authorities are ready to use lend-lease in the future, but now the focus is on deliveries under other powers that were approved by the US Congress.
Another reason for the postponement of lend-lease is that the US Democratic and Republican parties agree on the need to supply Ukraine with weapons. As an aide to one of the Democratic congressmen said, if Republicans change their minds or change public sentiment, lend-lease can be used to circumvent legislative attempts to block supplies.
