Investigators are considering four versions of a massive leak of classified data from American intelligence and the Pentagon – from employee dissatisfaction to deliberate sabotage in order to undermine US national security, Reuters writes, citing sources.
The investigation is at an early stage, officials said, and investigators are “actively investigating” the possible root causes of the leak and the alleged motives of the individual or group of individuals who allowed it. Reuters emphasizes that this is the largest leak of classified data since 2013, when more than 700,000 classified documents and videos were posted on the WikiLeaks website.
As Michael Mulroy, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East, explained to the agency, the leak most likely occurred in the United States, since “most of the leaked documents were only in the hands of the United States.” Two agency sources also admitted that some of the leaked documents may have been forged “to mislead investigators as to their origin.”
The New York Times reported on the leak of secret US Pentagon documents on April 7. Initially, it was about papers related to the planning of the Ukrainian counteroffensive. Then there were also data concerning the countries of the Middle East and China, the fight against terrorism, new information about the state of the forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the situation near Bakhmut (Artemovsk), etc.
