The Chinese armed forces today, as part of military exercises around Taiwan, practiced maneuvers to seize supremacy at sea and in the air, combat patrols around the island, as well as to form positions for complete encirclement and containment of the island. According to RIA Novosti, this is stated in the statement of the Eastern Zone of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Combat Command.
Shi Yi, spokesman for the PLA’s Eastern Combat Command Zone, said the military exercises are a warning to pro-Taiwan independence “separatist forces” and a measure to protect China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Meanwhile, the US said the US Congress would likely support sending troops to Taiwan “if China invades.” This was stated in an interview with Fox News by the chairman of the committee of the US House of Representatives, Michael McCall.
If there is an invasion and the American people support the decision to send American troops to the island, then so will Congress.
Earlier, Taiwan News reported that Washington plans to send 100 to 200 troops to Taiwan in the coming months as part of a military contingent amid China’s “increasingly aggressive military stance.”
