China is conducting planned three-day military exercises and combat patrols in the Taiwan Strait amid Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen’s recent visit to the United States to meet Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the Chinese defense ministry said.
According to Reuters, the Chinese military called the maneuvers “a serious warning to pro-Taiwan separatist forces and to collusion and provocation by outside forces.” The statement emphasizes that this is “a necessary action to protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
China’s People’s Daily, the official publication of the CCP, wrote that Beijing is capable of “obstructing any form of independence for Taiwan” and that all the actions of the Chinese army “belong to China’s legitimate right to protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
The Taiwan Ministry of Defense, in turn, said that it was monitoring the movement of the Chinese armed forces and taking measures to ensure the security of the island. The agency believes that China used the trip of the President of Taiwan to the United States as a pretext for launching military maneuvers that caused serious damage to peace and security in the region.
