If Russia and Ukraine agree on a ceasefire under the current conditions, this will not guarantee a “just and lasting peace,” US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in an interview with the German Funke.

According to Blinken, at this stage, the ceasefire could lead to “the practical ratification by Russia of the seizure of significant Ukrainian territories.” The diplomat also suggested that in such circumstances, Russia “could regroup its troops and start fighting again after a certain time,” RBC reports.

“Russia must get to the point where it is ready to enter into constructive negotiations,” Blinken said.

The fact that calls for a truce in Ukraine are not yet acceptable was previously stated by the coordinator for strategic communications at the White House National Security Council, John Kirby.

At the same time, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron called for the resumption of peace talks between Moscow and Kiev “as soon as possible” during the latter’s recent visit to Beijing.
