Almost half of Americans – 49% – supported the initiation of a criminal case against former US President Donald Trump. The joint survey by Reuters and Ipsos involved 1,004 adults in the country.
The accusations against Trump were supported by about 84% of Americans who consider themselves adherents of the Democratic Party. Among Republican supporters, only 16% spoke positively about the case.
At the same time, about 40% of Republicans said that because of the case against the ex-president, they are more likely to vote for him in the presidential election in 2024. Another 38% felt that Trump’s criminal prosecution had no effect on their opinion. Only 12% reported a decrease in loyalty to a politician.
Trump is also reportedly leading among Republican candidates by a wide margin, with 58% of Republicans saying he is their preferred option when Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has announced plans to run for president, came in second in the poll with 21% support.
76% of Republicans believe that law enforcement officials are trying to make Trump an illegitimate presidential candidate. Among Democrats, this opinion was shared by 34%.
About 51% of all respondents, of which only 18% are Republicans, said the charges against Trump should disqualify him from running for president.
The ex-president of the United States is charged with 34 episodes, including the falsification of business documents. Trump refused to plead guilty.
