Vice-Chancellor, Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection of Germany Robert Habek (“The Greens”) believes that it is necessary to impose sanctions on those countries that, despite the events in Ukraine, receive uranium from Russia. According to TASS, he expressed this point of view at the end of a two-day visit to Kyiv.

In the course of negotiations on this topic in Ukraine, according to Habek, the issue of “deliveries of uranium for nuclear fuel rods to Europe from Russia” was first raised. The head of the German Ministry of Economy noted that the Ukrainian side asked him why the purchase of Russian uranium is still not under sanctions. “And I don’t think there’s a good answer to that,” the minister admitted. “However, this has to happen at some point, even if it means a change for countries that still have nuclear power plants running on Russian uranium. But it seems reasonable to me, so I will defend it, ”Khabek stated.

At the same time, he called for a more consistent application of existing sanctions against Russia. “We have clear evidence that the current sanctions are bypassed through third countries,” the minister said. “This is by no means acceptable,” he said.

Non-EU companies that illegally transfer goods to Russia should face sanctions, Habek said. And those who know about violations of sanctions, as he clarified, should also report them, “otherwise it will be considered a criminal offense.” The next sanctions package, according to Habek, should define “these and as many other measures as possible.”

Earlier, Khabek has already stated that the EU should begin to exercise control over the final consumers of dual-use goods, since such products, from his point of view, can enter the Russian Federation through the countries or republics of the former USSR bordering on it.
