Chairman of the Council under the President of the Russian Federation for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights Valery Fadeev called for the creation of a domestic analogue of Wikipedia as soon as possible in order to close it. It is reported by Interfax.

“We need to create an alternative as soon as possible and close Wikipedia. Here is my position. Once again, so that you understand: I am not calling for closing it tomorrow, but, of course, we must move towards the closure of Wikipedia, because this is an ideological, politicized product, ”Fadeev said at a press conference on Tuesday.

He noted that Wikipedia is very convenient for obtaining background information.

“There are a lot of distortions, to put it mildly, when it comes to politics, history, but such simple things are convenient. There is no alternative. Now vigorous work is underway to create an alternative, ”said Fadeev.

In turn, HRC member Igor Ashmanov supported Fadeev’s position, calling Wikipedia “a strategic weapon of the enemy.” He recalled that currently in Russia work is underway to replenish the analogue of Wikipedia – the scientific and educational encyclopedic portal “Knowledge”, created on the basis of the Great Russian Encyclopedia, one of the features of this portal is the lack of anonymity among the authors of articles.

At the end of last December, Maksut Shadayev, head of the Ministry of Digital Development, announced the launch of the domestic analogue of Wikipedia, the Knowledge portal, in 2023.

Due to the refusal to remove content prohibited in the Russian Federation, the Wikipedia site is marked in domestic search engines as a violator of the law. In addition, the Wikimedia Foundation has been fined several times.
