Few things are as radically necessary as taking the side of democracy, especially at this time when it is under threat. Democracy implies, among so many possibilities for fulfillment, a life in peace.

Adherence to this political system must be greater than any other value in the current circumstances, because the opposite is absolute chaos that will condemn us to a totalitarian regime. Do we want that?

And if we try democracy…

I remember the bad times in the past governments. Who does not have in mind the vulgarity of certain presidents, unnecessary provocative speeches to the opposition, threats to journalists, the risk we as a country fell into due to the celebration of various economic pacts with other countries that did not bring any benefit to the country. What to say about the legislative power, various failed discussions about legal norms that really matter, faces bloodied by violence, collapsed courts, constitutional courts, and even presidents. We have always said this, before and now, whether we like it or not, every president, except for what is established by the Constitution, must finish his term. In democracies, there can be no overthrow of the van. And not to forget to list, do you remember the famous constituent mandates?

history tells us

Let’s take a good look and take sides. In this cycle of our democracy, we can understand how the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the excess debt left by the two previous governments did not allow the latter to start with economic prosperity. Do we take it seriously? I admit that one needs to be somewhat of an expert in this matter. It is up to the Government to communicate this.

A reduced view of the present leads us to a cheap and comfortable position.

In the meantime, it is our civic duty to identify what or who are the opponents of democracy today. I deliberately choose the word democracy, not president, because this is beyond personal. Yes, when this clarification has already been made, it must be said that it is strange that the votes of those who do not want, cannot or do not know how to remain democrats.

Cuba: voting in a dictatorship

Today’s opposition is against the president or against the system. Has anyone presented us with a comprehensive proposal for our real problem, which is organized crime, or maybe the narratives are just an attempt to withstand these persistent blows of not letting work alone.

If you or I don’t like the president, because you think whatever you think about him, punish him at the polls or don’t talk to him if you see him on the street. Or if you think you should go home now, but you also want your rights for you and your family to be respected forever, then the way out of executive power is legal, not any other way.

A reduced view of the present leads us to a cheap and comfortable position. The fight for democracy is a lifelong commitment. Maybe like love or marriage, it won’t be for the family to throw it away at the first crisis. Democracy must be fought hard, in a storm. Loyalty must be radical because the temptations of caudillism and ruling by favors and discontents were very great and miserable. We have to stand on the side of democracy because that is what we deserve. (OR)
