There are several reasons behind the well-known love of pets for packages and boxes, said zoopsychologist Olga Razlogova.

According to her, climbing into the box when stressed, the cat feels protected. “Some owners, when moving, put the cat in an empty box in a new apartment. This helps the pet to adapt to a new place more easily,” said Razlogova.

Another reason why cats sleep in boxes is the craving for comfort. It’s warm and smells like paper, which they love. In addition, for many, the box is associated with childhood, when they, newborns, were placed there with their mother cat. The box is also a great toy – it is pleasant to scratch and chew on it. And the box is a great hiding place that a cat can use for “hunting” – for example, when playing.

Packages attract pets because of their ability to rustle. This awakens the hunting instincts in the cat. “In addition, smart animals quickly understand that food “arrives” in bags. And the abundance of new smells attracts them to explore the packages. And, of course, the package can also serve as a kind of shelter, ”the specialist explained.

However, Razlogova emphasized, it is important not to leave a pet unattended to play with bags: some cats like to gnaw on cellophane, which can result in intestinal obstruction.
