Chinese President Xi Jinping does not support Japan’s claims to the South Kuriles. This is reported by the agency Kyodo, citing sources. In the future, China intends to take a neutral position on the issue of ownership of the islands. According to Kommersant, the Chinese leader gave such a guarantee to Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Moscow.
Agency sources noted that during the talks, the Russian president emphasized the importance of developing a special duty-free zone, which Russia created on the islands last year. Putin also called on his Chinese counterpart to invest in the region. As part of the negotiations, the parties also touched upon the issue of ownership of the South Kuriles.
As relations between Japan and South Korea have improved, Putin said Seoul has withdrawn from investing in Russia’s duty-free zone. President Xi told his Russian counterpart that China would take a neutral stance on Japan’s claims to the islands, but said nothing about whether Beijing would allow its enterprises to join the Russian project.
Kyodo writes that the head of China left the decision of this issue to the discretion of the chairman of the State Committee for Development and Reform Affairs Zheng Shanjie.
