Musical works or their fragments often accompany many events in our lives, including solemn ones. In addition, music itself occupies human attention, generating certain emotions and bodily reactions. This increases the chances that the melody will be encoded in the mind along with the details of a particular situation. So, being heard later, the music is able to resurrect the memory of this.

According to Gismeteo, the researchers compared the music with other audio signals received by the brain, such as natural and industrial noises, as well as lexemes that evoke emotion (“hurricane”, “money”, etc.). Compared to them, the melody evoked memories to the same extent as the words. However, it was found that music with sad or disturbing intonations provoked the corresponding emotions more intensely than similar words.

It is noted that this or that work is able to return us to emotionally positive situations of the past, which can be used as a therapy.

Also, a melody that is especially familiar and often listened to evokes more memories, and is more spontaneous at the same time.

Therefore, the function of music as a more effective signal than a favorite movie or book is based on the fact that a person, as a rule, listens to songs and melodies more often than watching movies, television shows or reading literature.
