In all democratic systems in the world, parliaments have the power to control other functions of the state, especially the executive branch.

Ecuador, in its rather cannibalistic political character, has had an impressive number of political trials throughout history. In fact, as Minister of Finance in 1986 and as Vice President of the Republic in 1995, I faced separate trials.

The recall is officially underway

The inspection processes in Ecuador were sometimes justified and bordered on the absurd. So, for example, party X was in the government, its minister of energy increased the price of fuel, and party Y in the Assembly called for the minister to be recalled. Party Y was in power then, its minister of energy raised fuel, and then party X from the Assembly called for the minister’s impeachment. Cannibal absurdity, incoherence of great senselessness.

But the political impeachment of a minister or official has always been immensely easier than the impeachment of a president or vice president. Trials of leaders around the planet are much more limited and have more lockdowns, as the risk of destabilization is too great for the republic.

Las’s misjudgment: moving between the assassination of his reputation and the insecurity of the streets

Today, after almost 100 years, the president is again politically impeached. The debate on the legality of what the Constitutional Court did will be very long. But there is no doubt that this new trial reflects, beyond the mistakes or successes of the government, beyond the ferocity of the opposition, the absolute lack of common goals, national goals, minimal consensus agenda in our society.

Whatever the outcome of the impeachment trial, the country will be worse off…we’ll wait and see how the political landscape clears up…

Alfredo Borrero is a key figure in the two scenarios that Guillermo Lasso would face before a political trial in the National Assembly

Many argue that the vice president’s impeachment in 1995 struck the foundations of a very successful economic program. What is certain is that after the process that caused my departure from the country, a terrible destabilizing sequence took place that in a short time generated many governments, several leaders in exile and prosecutions.

But none of the fundamental problems of the country were solved in the process. And when an authoritarian regime took over, not only were major issues not resolved, but the best opportunity the republic had to continue with booming commodity prices and international market conditions was missed. very favorable, not only due to trade conditions, but also due to the growth of new markets such as China. All this is spent.

We still do not understand that it is not about people, but about a national attitude that we do not have; goals of the country that we do not have and understanding by the citizens that the process of victory over poverty requires decades of good work and maintenance.

Whatever the outcome of the impeachment trial, the country will deteriorate, investments will be delayed, we will wait to see how the political landscape clears up, and the dream of own development and victory over poverty will be further away. (OR)
