Bloomberg, as well as Politico, The New York Times and The Washington Post published a joint statement calling for the release of The Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Gershkovich, accused of espionage in Russia.
The newsrooms expressed concern about the detention of Gershkovich, “whose coverage of events in Russia was objective and accurate at a time when reliable information is needed in the world.” They believe that the reporter’s arrest is intended to “put pressure on independent journalism and deprive the public of important news,” RBC reports.
In addition, a statement in support of the WSJ correspondent was issued by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a human rights organization headquartered in New York. The appeal was signed by the heads of Euronews, The Washington Post, AFP, AP, The Times, Financial Times, The Economist and other media (38 signatures in total). First of all, they ask to give the journalist access to a lawyer and to allow him to communicate with his family.
US President Joe Biden also called for the release of the WSJ correspondent.
