A military conflict between the United States and China is possible, but not yet probable, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, said in an interview with Defense One.
There is a lot of rhetoric in both China and the US, he said, that could give the impression that “war is just around the corner” or that both sides are “on the brink of war.” Milley allowed that “it could happen”, explaining that “it is quite possible that an incident or some other triggering event could occur that could lead to an uncontrolled escalation.” At the same time, he stressed that “it is not impossible, but it does not fall into the category of probable at the moment.”
Milley also added that he agrees with calls for the US to send weapons to Taiwan. “One of the elements of deterrence is to make sure your opponent knows the costs outweigh the benefits,” the general explained, stressing that Washington has three or four years to bring Taiwan into this position.
At the same time, Milley called fears about the Sino-Russian military alliance premature.
