British security service MI5 has raised the terror alert level in Northern Ireland from “substantial” to “severe”, indicating a high likelihood of a terrorist attack. It is reported by Interfax with reference to Sky News.
“MI5 has increased the terrorist alert level in Northern Ireland from ‘substantial’, when there is a threat of a terrorist attack, to ‘severe’, when there is a high possibility of an attack,” Northern Ireland Minister Chris Heaton-Harris, who commented on MI5’s decision, was quoted by the agency as saying.
However, he mentioned a “small number” of individuals who may resort to “politically motivated violence.”
On Saturday, a man was detained in Northern Ireland as part of an investigation into the murder of operative John Caldwell, for which the so-called New Irish Republican Army, a small paramilitary group that opposes the British presence in Northern Ireland and in favor of unification with the Republic of Ireland, claimed responsibility. In the UK, this group is considered a terrorist group.
