The Government of Japan considers unacceptable the position of Russia on the impossibility of coordinating consultations concerning fisheries in the area of the Kuril Islands. According to TASS, this was announced in Tokyo by the Secretary General of the Japanese Cabinet Hirokazu Matsuno.

“We consider the position of the Russian side unacceptable and are exploring the possibilities for resuming activities within the framework of the relevant agreement,” Matsuno said. He also noted that Tokyo positively assesses the agreement reached on March 24 with Moscow on the conditions for catching salmon and trout by Japanese fishermen in the 200-mile exclusive economic zone of Japan.

Russia and Japan fish in each other’s 200-mile exclusive economic zones based on a 1984 agreement. Every year, countries hold consultations to agree on quotas for catching seafood and discuss other issues.

On January 29, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russia had informed Japan that it was impossible to agree on the timing of consultations on fishing in the South Kuriles due to Tokyo’s anti-Russian measures. She also stressed that Russia categorically does not accept any “protests” from the Japanese side in connection with this decision. The countries signed an agreement on certain issues of cooperation in the field of harvesting of marine living resources in 1998.
